In the spirit of embracing not only the joyful sunshine but the spirit of summer too, I’d like to make some changes in my daily routine.
Living in the UK, there is a much clearer distinction between the seasons than my previous Southern Hemisphere climate. Over here, Winter was distinctly icy and dark while Spring was an adventure of colour as the world drew in a breath of fresh air. I think I can safely say that it is now properly summer – seeing as today is the summer solstice. Technically, we’re already on our way back to Winter, but let’s not think about that.
This is how I plan to make the most of Summer:
1. Drinking More Water
No more desk-dehydration. I’m taking a jug to work and I plan to infuse some water with all sorts of things like strawberries and lemons – what fun. We have a running joke to call these infusions ‘Douche Drinks’. I stand by that and look forward to my deliciously douchy drinks.
2. Plenty of Flowers
After getting so much joy out of a bunch of flowers at my door last week, I’ve replaced them with a huge bunch of wonderfully dramatic Stargazer Lillies (which also smell like a dream). It makes me smile every time I walk through the door. They don’t last as long as pot plants but let’s be realistic, I tend to kill those.
3. Music To My Ears
I’ve been enjoying the new Mumford & Sons album recently, but between that and my collection of business-themed audiobooks, my playlist could do with a bit of a lightening up. For now I’ll stick to what Spotify recommends (but I’m open to suggestions if you’ve found something fabulous).
4. Summer Ice Lollies
In South Africa, I grew up on these magical ice lollies that come frozen in a long tube, which you break in half and share with someone (or indulge in both if no one is looking). I have yet to find an alternative to these, but I’m on the lookout. I believe frozen treats are a summer-time freezer essential.
5. More Salad For Work
This is an easy one. Salad from home > Sandwiches from Pret.
6. More Lunch In The Summer Sunshine
Sad desk lunches are great (hah), but there are few things quite as nice as a glorious lunch hour in the park. Regent’s Park is around the corner from work and I’d like to spend more time there during my lunch break.
7. Get Up An Hour Earlier
My schedule is fantastic. As a bit of a night owl, I find endless joy in the fact that I only have to be in the office for 11 am. It means I can work on my personal projects comfortably until 2 am and still get more than enough sleep for the next day. Unfortunately, Summer doesn’t agree with my hours because the sun is blazing by 6 am. I think it’s probably time to adjust my clock a bit to take advantage of that. I’d like to start getting up an hour or two earlier. Morning blogging anybody?
8. There’s So Much Room For Activities!
I’m going to take this quote completely out of context and use it to talk about exercise. I bought an Apple Watch and I’m absolutely loving it. As one of it’s wonderful features, it has made me acutely aware of the opportunity for more activity. So here it is in writing: more stairs, more walking, more gym, less bus.
